Learning about and managing my Google smartphone

If your Google smartphone becomes unresponsive or doesnʼt perform as expected, you can perform a hard reset to return it to the factory default state.
  1. Before resetting your phone, turn it off and then on again. This may solve the problem. If your phone doesnʼt turn on, follow these steps to perform a hard reset.
  2. Press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons until the Android Recovery screen appears.
  3. Press the Volume down button.
  4. With Recovery Mode displayed, press the Power button.
  5. Scroll to wipe data/factory reset by pressing the Volume down button.
  6. Press the Power button.
  7. Scroll to Yes by pressing the Volume down button.
  8. Press the Power button.
  9. The phone will now wipe all contents.
  10. Press the Power button.
  11. The phone will now reboot to the initial setup screen.
Warning: all of your data, downloaded apps and settings will be erased during the reset.

  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Storage.
  4. The storage details are displayed.

  3. Touch About phone.
  4. Touch SIM status.
  5. The phone number is displayed.
  1. Locate the SIM card slot on your device
  2. Insert the SIM removal tool (included in the box the phone came in) and push to eject the SIM/memory card tray.
  3. Remove the SIM card tray.
  4. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card tray.
  5. Re-insert the SIM card tray and push until it clicks into place.
Note: The SIM card slot location may differ depending on your model.

In your device settings, you can see the software version you’re running, check for updates and set up automatic updates (if available).

Before you update
It can take some time to install updates, so make sure your device is:
  • Charged or plugged in
  • Connected to Wi-Fi

To check your software version:
  1. Swipe up to view Apps.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch About phone.
  4. The software version is displayed under Android version.
To update your software:
  1. Swipe up to view Apps.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch System.
  4. Touch System update.
  5. Touch Check for update.
  6. If an update is available, wait for it to download.
