What is the Samsung SmartThings Tracker and how do I use it?

The Samsung SmartThings Tracker is a small, data-only device that runs on Canada’s best national network where there is LTE-M coverage. It allows its users to find what matters most and is exclusive to Bell.

Key features:

  • Get real-time and on-demand location tracking
  • Create custom zones that will alert you when your tracker enters or leaves that area
  • Share the location of your tracker in real time with the click of a button
  • Durable and water-resistant, making it ideal for indoor or outdoor situations

During the initial setup, the tracker must be paired with one mobile device. Then, using the SmartThings app, you can link up to 19 additional mobile devices for monitoring the same tracker.

Up to 200 Samsung SmartThings Trackers can be connected to one account.

Setting up my Tracker

See the Quick Start Guide for setup instructions.

Inviting someone to monitor my Tracker

  1. Launch the SmartThings app.
  2. Select the menu icon (three lines) at the top-left of the app homepage.
  3. Select Members.
  4. Select Add member.
  5. There are two options available:
    1. Invite a nearby person using the QR code.
    2. Invite someone using a Samsung account.

Sending a report on my Tracker’s location

You can send a location report to the SmartThings app from your tracker by pressing the power button twice. This will send an alert to all members connected to that tracker.

Maximizing my Tracker’s battery life

The battery of the Samsung SmartThings Tracker can generally last about a week on a single charge. You can optimize its battery life by enabling power saving mode, which will turn the tracker off during periods of inactivity. When power saving mode is enabled, the tracker will pause location updates. It will also pause location updates when it does not sense motion or it is not used for approximately 30 minutes.

To activate power saving mode in the SmartThings app:

  1. Select the tracker.
  2. Select the three dots at the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Power saving mode.
  5. Toggle power saving mode from OFF to ON.
  6. Configure the days/times to enable power saving mode.
  7. Select Done.

Unpairing my Tracker from the app

  2. Select the menu icon (three lines) at the top-left of the app homepage.
  3. Select Devices.
  4. Select the three dots at the top-right corner.
  5. Select Edit.
  6. Select the minus button beside the tracker you’d like to remove.
  7. Select Delete.
  1. Do I need a Samsung mobile device to use a Samsung SmartThings Tracker?

  2. No. As long as your mobile device supports Android 5 (Lollipop) and above or iOS 10 and above, you can use the Samsung SmartThings Tracker. You just need to download the SmartThings app from Galaxy AppsPlay Store or App Store, and connect the tracker to your mobile device.

  3. Do I need to be connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for my Samsung SmartThings Tracker to work?

  4. You only need Bluetooth for the initial setup. After that, the tracker uses the LTE-M network, meaning Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are not required. Although the LTE-M network is part of the LTE network, there may be some areas where service is limited (for example, underground parking garages or inside buildings with no LTE signal). This service is currently not available in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. See our coverage map.

  5. Do I need a monthly plan for my Samsung SmartThings Tracker to work?

  6. Yes, you need a Connected Tracker plan. If you deactivate your plan, you have 90 days to reactivate it. Note: if you don’t reactivate within 90 days, your tracker will become inactive indefinitely.

  7. How many mobile devices can be linked to a SmartThings Tracker?

  8. You need to pair the tracker with a mobile phone for initial setup. Then, up to 19 more devices can use the SmartThings app to monitor the SmartThings Tracker.

  9. What do the different colour lights on my Samsung SmartThings Tracker mean?

  10. In the SmartThings app:

    1. Select the tracker.
    2. Select the three dots at the top-right corner.
    3. Select How to use.
    4. Scroll down for information.
