How to set up McAfee anti-spam filters

McAfee® Security from Bell includes an anti-spam filter that you can use if you have email accounts with service providers other than Bell. The filter screens your email for junk mail and phishing messages, and can be used with both email software and webmail.
To set it up, follow the appropriate instructions below. If you access the same email account using both email software and webmail, follow both sets of instructions.

Note:

  • Your Bell Mail account includes its own junk mail and spam filters. The McAfee Security anti-spam filter will not work with it. Learn how to set up the junk mail filter in Bell Mail.
  • If your email account requires an encrypted connection (SSL), the McAfee Security anti-spam filter will not work. If you don’t know whether your email connection is encrypted, check with your service provider.

For email software:

  1. Double-click the McAfee icon on your desktop.
  2. Open the Web and Email Protection drawer, and then click Anti-Spam.
  3. Open the Custom Filtering Rules drawer and then click Add.
  4. Under Action, select Allow to allow the specified messages through, or Block to prevent them from getting through.
  5. Under Field select the part of the message you want filtered:
    • Body (message content)
    • Header: This refers to the information in the address fields.
    • Recipient
    • Sender
    • Subject
  6. Type the word or phrase you want to block or allow.
You can also select Use regular expressions to find particular words and characters in your custom filtering rule to specify common terms you frequently see in spam email.
  7. Click Apply.

For webmail:

  1. Double-click the McAfee icon on your desktop.
  2. Open the Web and Email Protection drawer and then click Anti-Spam.
  3. Open the Webmail Filtering Rules drawer and then click Add.
  4. Enter your email address, password and description of the account (optional).
  5. Click Apply.
