Wireless Public Alert Awareness FAQs

Upcoming system test:

On November 20th 2024, there will be a test of the Alert Ready emergency system. You may receive an emergency notification on compatible wireless devices on that day. Note: this test may not be performed in all regions.

No action is required on your part. For more information, visit AlertReady.ca .

Alert Ready is a service designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving emergency alert messages to Canadians. The Alert Ready system was developed in partnership with federal, provincial, and territorial emergency management officials, Pelmorex Weather Networks (Television) Inc., the broadcast industry, and wireless service providers to ensure you receive emergency alerts immediately and know when to take action to keep you and your family safe.

It is the role of the relevant provincial, territorial and federal authorities to determine the content of an alert, the area in which it is distributed and its timing. All wireless service providers have the capability to distribute emergency alerts.

To see if your device will receive these messages and its required settings, please check the list of compatible devices. Please note that more devices will be added shortly.

Nationwide test alerts will be sent to compatible devices to ensure performance accuracy. To find out the test schedule for your province, please visit AlertReady.ca .

As of 2019, all devices that are sold by Bell are WPA-compatible and phones software is kept up to date regularly.

If your phone was made before 2019, check the list below to see if it's compatible.

To ensure your compatible device receives the emergency alert, it must be connected to an LTE cellular network at the time the alert is issued. If your compatible device is connected to Wi-Fi, the alert may not be received.

It is important to know that the emergency alert will follow your device settings:

  • The volume of the alert will be the same as the set volume on your device at that time.
  • If your device is set with a reminder feature, this may cause the alert to repeat until you acknowledge it.
  • If your device is set to silent or “do not disturb” mode, the alert may be hidden with other notifications.
