Learning about and managing my Apple iPhone

If your Apple iPhone becomes unresponsive or doesn’t perform as expected, you can perform a hard reset to return it to the factory default state. If you donʼt have iTunes on your computer, youʼll need to download and install it.

Warning: A hard reset will delete your data, apps and settings.
You should perform a manual shut down of your iPhone before starting this process to confirm that a factory reset is required. Some issues can be addressed by powering off and on your iPhone.
  1. Ensure your iPhone is powered off.
  2. Plug the USB cable into the iPhone and computer.
  3. On your computer, start iTunes.
  4. On your iPhone, press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  5. Press and hold the (SIDE) Power button until you see connected to iTunes screen on your iPhone.
  6. On the computer, when prompted that there is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored, click Restore.
  7. Review the warning that explains what it means to reset your phone to its factory default.
  8. Click Restore and Update
  9. iTunes will begin to restore the setting to factory default on the iPhone.
  10. Your iPhone has been restored (reset) successfully.

  1. Touch Settings
  2. Touch General
  3. Touch About.
  4. The memory status will be displayed.

To insert or remove the SIM card in your phone.

  1. Insert the SIM removal tool (included in the box the phone came in) into the small hole on the right edge of the iPhone. Push to eject the SIM tray.
  2. Remove the SIM tray and insert the SIM card, with the metal contacts facing down in the tray.
  3. Please note the SIM card will only sit in the SIM tray one way.
  4. Re-insert the SIM tray and push until it clicks into place.

  2. Scroll to and touch Phone.
  3. Your phone number will be displayed beside My Number.
Caller ID allows you to hide or display your phone number in outgoing calls.
  1. Touch Settings.
  2. Scroll to and touch Phone.
  3. Touch Show My Caller ID.
  4. If Show My Caller ID is on, touch the slider to turn it off.
  5. The caller ID option has been changed.

With the Wi-Fi Assist feature, your iPhone automatically switches to mobile data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. When this feature is on, your phone might use more mobile data than normal, and it will count towards the data usage in your plan.

  1. Touch Settings.
  2. Touch Cellular.
  3. Scroll to and touch the Wi-Fi Assist slider to change the setting (e.g., from off to on).
  4. Wi-Fi Assist is now on.Touch the Wi-Fi Assist slider again to turn it off.

In your device settings, you can see the software version you’re running and check for updates.

Before you update

It can take some time to install updates, so make sure your device is:

  • Charged or plugged in
  • Connected to Wi-Fi

To check your software version:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Touch General.
  3. Touch About phone.
  4. The software version is displayed.

To update your software:

  1. Touch Settings.
  2. Scroll to and touch General.
  3. Touch Software Update.
  4. The software version is displayed.
  5. If an update is available, touch Download and Install.
  6. Read the terms and conditions and touch Agree.
  7. Touch Agree.
  8. Wait for the update to download.
  9. Your iPhone will restart to complete the update.
