Learning about and managing my Samsung smartphone

If your Samsung smartphone becomes unresponsive or doesnʼt perform as expected, you can perform a hard reset to return it to the factory default state.

  1. Before resetting your phone, turn it off and then on again. This may solve the problem. If your phone doesnʼt turn on, follow these steps to perform a hard reset.
  2. Press and hold the Volume up, Power (Optional: and Bixby button) until the Samsung logo appears on the screen.
  3. The start-up screen will appear briefly, followed by the hard reset menu.
  4. Scroll to Wipe data/factory reset by pressing the Volume down button.
  5. Press the Power button.
  6. Scroll to Yes by pressing the Volume down button.
  7. Press the Power button.
  8. The phone will now wipe all contents.
  9. Press the Power button.
  10. The phone will now reboot to the initial setup screen.


Warning: all of your data, downloaded apps and settings will be erased during the reset.
  1. Swipe up or down to view the apps.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Device maintenance or Device care.
  4. Touch Storage.
  5. The space used, the total space and the available space are displayed.

  3. Scroll to and touch About phone.
  4. Scroll to My phone number, your phone number is displayed.
  1. Locate the SIM card slot on your device
  2. Insert the SIM removal tool (included in the box the phone came in) and push to eject the SIM/memory card tray.
  3. Remove the SIM/memory card tray.
  4. With the metal contacts facing down, insert the SIM card into the smaller section of the tray.
  5. If you want to add a microSD card, insert the microSD card into the larger section of the tray.
  6. Re-insert the SIM/memory card tray and push until it clicks into place.


The SIM card slot location may differ depending on your model.

In your device settings, you can see the software version you’re running, check for updates and set up automatic updates (if available).

Before you update

It can take some time to install updates, so make sure your device is:

  • Charged or plugged in
  • Connected to Wi-Fi

To check your software version:

  1. Swipe up or down to view Apps.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch About Phone.
  4. Touch Software information.
  5. The software version is displayed.

 

To update your software:

  1. Swipe up or down to view Apps.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to and touch Software Update. (A bold N next to Software Update means a new version is available.)
  4. Touch Download and Install.
  5. The phone will check for updates. Touch Download to begin the update.
